Are Slides on an RV Worth It?

Whether RV slide-outs are worth it depends on your travel needs, camping preferences, and lifestyle. Slide-outs significantly expand the interior living space, making even the smallest RVs feel much larger. In many cases, expanding living space means enjoying features like larger dining areas, spacious seating, and more storage.

In addition to having more space while camping, you’ll also enjoy more value when it’s time for your next camper. RVs with slide-outs often have higher RV resale values than floor plans without slide-outs!

What Are The Disadvantages of RV Slide-Outs?

Slide-outs add space and comfort, but they also come with a few potential downsides:

  1. Maintenance and Repairs: Slide-outs involve complex mechanical systems, such as motors, hydraulics, or cables, which can wear out or malfunction over time, requiring costly repairs.
  2. Weight and Balance: Slide-outs add extra weight to your RV, impacting towing capacity, fuel efficiency, and overall balance. Proper weight distribution is crucial to avoid instability on the road.
  3. Leaks and Seals: Improperly sealed slide-outs can lead to water leaks, especially in heavy rain. Regular maintenance is needed to ensure seals stay watertight.
  4. Reduced Insulation: Slide-out areas may have thinner walls and less insulation, which can lead to drafts in colder weather or reduced energy efficiency when heating or cooling.
  5. Limited Access When Closed: When retracted, slide-outs can block access to certain areas inside the RV, such as the bathroom or kitchen, making quick stops less convenient.
  6. Setup Complexity: Extending and retracting slide-outs requires extra steps during setup and teardown. You must also ensure sufficient space around the RV to extend them fully.

Choosing a small travel trailer with a slide-out means you don’t have to compromise on space or comfort. These innovative designs allow you to enjoy the amenities of a larger RV while maintaining the ease of use of a compact camper.

I have personally owned and loved my 17-foot Forest River travel trailer for over four years! It’s allowed for less stressful travel days, and thanks to its small size, I’ve been able to enjoy some amazing national park and state park campgrounds I wouldn’t have been able to camp in with a larger RV trailer!

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or an extended adventure, a slide-out travel trailer offers the best of both worlds—practicality and spacious living on the go.
