What Is Full Body Paint on an RV?
Full-body RV paint is more similar to automotive painting than campers with more traditional exteriors. For most manufacturers, the process begins when the RV leaves the production line and heads to a dedicated paint facility.
First, the RV is washed and dried. Areas that won’t be painted are masked off with tape and paper. The RV is sanded and closely inspected for any cracks, pinholes, or other imperfections, which must be corrected before the paint process begins.
After the inspection, the first coat of paint is applied. Many manufacturers use multiple coats to create graphics, logos, and unique color schemes. After paint coats are applied, the masking is removed, but it can leave behind subtle ridges. Trained technicians use a process known as “blading” to remove these ridges by hand with a razor blade.
Finally, the RV is blown off to remove dust, and then moved to a final booth where multiple coats of clear and gelcoat are applied. This step can take weeks, as the paint must cure properly. Then, the RV is ready for a final inspection before any remaining exterior elements are added.
Given the time, materials, and craftsmanship involved in full-body paint, it’s no wonder it costs more, but the end result is truly something to appreciate.

How Do You Maintain & Protect Full Body Paint on an RV?
Full-body paint is largely considered more durable than traditional RV exteriors, but it is still important to properly clean and protect it to prevent paint fading. Here are some tips:
- Wash regularly with automotive vehicle soap.
- Wax at least once or twice a year. While the best RV wax for full-body paint is a matter of debate, each type of wax has its pros and cons. Consult a Camping World retail specialist for recommendations tailored to your RV and waxing preferences.
- Consider getting professional ceramic clear coating for the ultimate RV paint protection. RV paint protection film is another option, with a thin sheet that protects your RV exterior from wear and tear.
- If your RV’s exterior is damaged, consider having a service center perform an RV paint correction, which involves extensive buffing and polishing to restore it.
FAQs About Custom RV Paint Jobs
Although it often raises the overall price of an RV, full-body paint can be a worthwhile upgrade due to its durability. It offers more UV and weather resistance than traditional RV exteriors. It also requires less maintenance, which can save you money over time.
Depending on the manufacturer, the size of the RV, and the type of paint, full-body paint packages may cost $8,000 to $15,000 due to the custom handiwork, time, and materials required for this extensive process.
Many RVs come with exterior vinyl decals and other graphics. Over time, these can peel, crack, or fade. RVs with full-body paint do not use decals; instead, any graphics are painted directly onto the exterior with automotive-grade paint and covered with special clear coatings. These are less susceptible to age and weather-related degradation.
