Jayco is a leading manufacturer of travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers, and motorhomes. Odds are, you’ve crossed paths with a Jayco at the campground, on the highway, at the dealership, at an RV expo, or somewhere in the search for your next RV.

Here, we provide an in-depth overview of the company, its products, why it remains one of the most well-respected manufacturers in the RV community, and why it might be the right choice for your next RV.

Introduction to Jayco RVs

Explore the history, products, and services behind one of the leading manufacturers in the industry on this deep dive into Jayco RVs.

Drive through almost any campground in the United States, and you’re as likely to flip a coin heads as you are to see a Jayco RV parked in one of the campsites.

Jayco is a mainstay of the RV community. They’re recognized for providing quality RVs across the budget spectrum, with affordable stick-and-tin travel trailers on one side and high-tech, luxury fifth wheels and motorhomes on the other. Jaycos are a mainstay outside of the RV community, too, as passersby, tent campers, and neighbors recognize the swooped-wing bluejay logo everywhere Jaycos roam.

What’s led to their continued popularity? The answer is multifaceted, but much can be attributed to their early adoption of three key elements that founder Lloyd Bontrager valued and prioritized and that remain evident in their design, manufacturing processes, implementation, and customer support today: quality, innovation, and service. Each is apparent in Jayco’s products and the support offered to their customers, from groundbreaking RV technology to education to user-friendly RVs, to one of the most trusted warranty protections available to RVers.

Jayco at a Glance

Founded in 1968, Jayco has received significant recognition for its line of travel trailers, particularly the Jay Flight line, which has remained a bestseller in its category since 2005, while their luxury and intro-level fifth wheels, toy haulers, and motorhomes also compete at top levels, are well-respected in the industry, and are a favorite among RVers.

Jayco RVs boast fewer service needs in the first year of ownership than competitors, and the company has garnered praise for incorporating new user-friendly technology into its systems, including navigation, ride and handling, amenities, and more. Jayco customer support is also a testament to their wholistic approach to RV manufacturer and customer service.

Ever the innovators, Jayco recently announced the piloting of a new GPS-connected RV system to provide users with personalized travel recommendations, trip inspiration, and other how-to information based on their RV model – the latest example of their tech innovation forwardness.

Is Jayco A Good RV Brand?

Curious to know if Jayco may be right for you? Beyond their vast selection of reputable towables and motorhomes, look no further than the standout features that make Jayco a good brand for those looking for a quality RV with cutting-edge technology, design, and amenities.

Standout Features

Jayco offers a wide range of renowned features that enhance their RVs’ functionality, convenience, safety, and performance. These features are adapted to different models, sizes, and types of RVs, showcasing Jayco’s range of innovations.

That’s part of the benefit of a company with Jayco’s legacy and commitment to innovation: each year, they improve upon previous designs, implement new technology, and make adjustments to improve performance. The result? The patented RV features Jayco is known for.

Let’s explore some of their most well-known and valued features.

JAYCOMMAND™

Convenience merges with RV operational control with the JAYCOMMAND Smart RV System, one of Jayco’s most well-known and utilized features. This tool not only allows you to monitor and control the primary systems of your RV with a centralized touchscreen monitor, but you can also access JAYCOMMAND from your smartphone, giving you real-time information and allowing you to control your systems at any time, wherever you go.

JAYCOMMAND provides you with important information about your RV so you can foresee and prevent potential performance issues. Below are systems incorporated within JAYCOMMAND.

  • Battery
  • Generator
  • Tank Monitoring
  • Water Pump
  • Multiple Light Zones
  • Leveling
  • Water heater
  • Awnings
  • Slideouts
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring

JRide® Ride and Handling Packages

Jayco equips its motorhomes with ride and handling packages designed to make driving easier, more comfortable, safer, and with less impact on your motorhome’s various components. This system is known as Jayco’s JRide®.

From shock absorbers that rebound the RV’s suspension to jounce bumpers that reduce road noise and dampen impact, each element of these ride and handling packages serves a specific purpose to improve your driving experience.

There are three types of JRide® packages, and we’ve listed the components of each below.

JRide®
  • Rubber isolation mounts
  • Hellwig helper springs
  • Bilstein shock absorbers
  • Jounce bumpers
  • Stabilizing sway bar
  • Balanced driveshaft
JRide® PLUS
  • Computer-balanced driveshaft
  • Bilstein steering stabilizer
  • Koni® shocks
  • Front and rear jounce bumpers
  • 22.5 in. Michelin® tires
  • Heavy-duty front and rear stabilizer bars
JRide® PREMIUM
  • Computer-balanced driveshaft
  • Rear air suspension
  • Heavy-duty rear stabilizer bar
  • Full air brakes
  • SACHS shocks

Jayco Climate Shield

Climate Shield offers extreme weather protection to maintain efficient heating and cooling of your RV when temperatures rise or plummet below normal levels. This is helpful for those looking to extend their camping season and remain comfortable should they experience less-than-ideal climates.

Dubbed “four-season engineering,” Jayco employs a double layer of front cap fiberglass insulation, fully enclosed heated underbelly, double-sided flex foil insulation, tinted windows, and durable PEX plumbing. Climate Shield is available on select units, including Eagle products, North Point, Pinnacle luxury fifth wheels, and Seismic toy haulers.

Read more about the Climate Shield here.

Magnum Truss™ Roofing System

A patented Jayco design, the Magnum Truss™ roofing system fortifies their roofs to be able to support additional weight than some competitors. This design relies on stronger components and fasteners, using wood studs over aluminum supports, screws over staples, and larger nailplates in more locations.

  • Larger header beam, similar to home construction, between roof and slide-out openings
  • Thick 2” x 2” wood studs instead of aluminum improve load-bearing and reduce electrical shorts.
  • Screws are used instead of staples to fasten the ⅜” decking at the seams.

All incorporated, Jayco claims their roofs can sustain up to 50% more weight than competitor roofs.

Each Jayco-specific feature is a part of what Jacyo calls “The Jayco Difference.” Other technology, construction, and features include the Stronghold VBL™ laminated walls, overlander packages, custom frames, and more. Learn more about the Jayco Difference here

How Old Is Jayco?

Jayco was founded over 55 years ago by Lloyd and Bertha Bontrager on a farm in Middlebury, Indiana, in 1968. Their initial design and production facilities comprised two converted chicken houses and a barn. Lloyd had previously worked for an RV manufacturer and started the business believing he could make a better travel trailer. They specialized early on in fold-down trailers. Two partners joined Lloyd in the new venture. Bertha managed the bookkeeping, and their sons helped with design and production.

The company saw quick success in the late 60s and early 70s. y the end of 1973, they supplied a network of 235 dealerships in Canada and the United States. By 1987, they were the fourth largest towable manufacturer in the United States, and by 1995 the second largest.

Even early in the company’s tenure, its management philosophy prioritized innovation, quality, and service – three tenets you see embraced and recognized in the company and its products today. From the JayWren in the 1970s – the first non-fold-down camper trailer – to such innovations as the JRide® ride and handling package and the JAYCOMMAND™ control system, the company puts an emphasis on new technology, concepts, and construction to better serve their customers.

In July 2016, Jayco became a subsidiary of Thor Industries in an acquisition that benefited both companies, allowing Jayco to reach a wider audience. While Jayco became a wholly owned subsidiary, its original senior management continued to lead the business. Jayco maintains its family of brands, including Entegra Coach, Highland Ridge RV, and Starcraft RV

Jayco Camping World Dealerships

In 2023, Camping World and Jayco launched their first manufacturer-exclusive dealerships in Morgan Hill, California and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. These openings mark the first of their kind, a new format where the dealership will exclusively represent, sell, service, and showcase Jayco’s RVs and products.

The staff at these Jayco and Camping World locations specialize in Jayco products, features, technology, service, and warranties, so you receive expert attention when you come to buy, sell, or service your RV. At these locations, Jayco owners – and those looking to become Jayco owners – will have every resource available to find, service, and maintain their RVs. Centralizing this level of service and product offering provides Jayco owners and future owners an important added element of support.

Jayco Customer Support

Service is one of Jayco’s original three tenets, and they have built a reputation for producing quality RVs at every level, from lightweight travel trailers to luxury motorhomes. Jayco RVs see fewer service shop visits each year, and they boast one of the best warranties in the industry, doubling the length and increasing the coverage of their competitors.

2+3 Jayco Warranty

Jayco is known for offering one of the most comprehensive warranty packages available for its travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers, and motorhomes. Known as the 2+3 warranty, it provides two years of limited warranty and three years of structural warranty for towables. For motorhomes, the 2+3 provides two years or 24,000 miles of limited warranty, whichever comes first, and three years of structural warranty.

On top of that, Jayco boasts additional warranties from their supplier-partners, some of which include:

  • MORryde® rubber pin box assembly
  • Onan® generator
  • Winegard® Rayzar® & Roadstar antenna parts
  • Dexter® axles
  • Samsung® refrigerator
  • Intervac™ central vacuum
  • Goodyear® Endurance® tires
  • Shaw® vinyl flooring
  • Dicor roofing material
  • Huber industrial floor decking
  • Tredit™ aluminum wheels

See the full list here and breakdown here.

There’s a good reason why the Bluejay logo is a mainstay in campgrounds across the US. Jayco continues to deliver quality RVs yearly while making important technological, construction, and quality advances. And with such programs as the 2+3 warranty, they seem to be vested in the customer’s long-term benefit, and that earns high marks in our books.

Is Jayco A Good RV Brand?

While no RV manufacturer is without its critics, Jayco has consistently produced quality products across their various lines of RVs, earning industry acclaim, awards, and a loyal following of customers. In addition, they continue to update and improve the performance and technology of their RVs year after year while adjusting their lineup to meet market demand by introducing new floorplans and models.

Jayco is often compared to industry-respected competitors like Grand Design, a good sign as these manufacturers contend for market space in a competitive landscape. For RVers, it effectively ensures they continue to recieve quality, forward-thinking products. Jayco certainly holds their own and continues to validate their reputation as a quality, innovative RV manufacturer.

Who Makes Entegra RVs?

Entegra Coach is a subsidiary of Jayco and falls under Jayco’s family of brands, which also includes Starcraft RV and Highland Ridge RV. Formally known as Travel Supreme, Entegra was acquired in 2008 by Jayco, which was later acquired by Thor in 2016. Such acquisitions are fairly common in the industry.
