About Contributor

Kerri Cox is a teacher and freelance writer. After hating the outdoors for much of her life, an RV trip with her in-laws to Colorado changed Kerri’s life. She soon bought an RV for cross-country family trips. Her sons are now grown, so she and her husband have entered the next stage of their journey as empty nesters. She especially loves to visit mountains and national parks.

If you’ve ever seen Lucille Ball’s 1953 movie The Long, Long Trailer, you know her trailer was certainly long. But even it didn’t reach the length of today’s jaw-dropping travel trailers, some of which top 40 feet in length. While not the most nimble RVs on the road, a 40-foot travel trailer allows you to camp without being short on space. These large campers offer roomy layouts and plentiful amenities, whether you are traveling with kids, grandkids, or friends and family.

Key Takeaways

  • Spacious 40-foot travel trailers offer residential-style amenities, flexible floor plans, and sleeping capacities from 4 to 9, making them ideal for families, groups, or long-term campers.
  • Featured 2025 models include the Zinger 390DB with dual suites, the Wolf Den 306MM with a rear-view living room, and the Jay Flight SLX 380DQS with customizable sleeping layouts. Popular used models, such as the Jayco Eagle 330RSTS and KZ Sportsmen 363FL, provide luxury features at lower prices.
  • Key considerations: These trailers weigh between 8,000 and 11,000 pounds and offer about 320 sq. ft. of living space. New models typically cost $35,000 to $60,000, depending on construction and amenities.

Best 40 Foot Travel Trailer Floor Plans

Let’s explore some current models of 40-foot pull-behind campers for 2025. Each has a spacious floor plan and plentiful amenities:

CrossRoads Zinger 390DB

Specs

  • Length: 42’11”
  • Dry Weight: 10,620 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,580 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 6

The Zinger 390DB is a genuine home on wheels. It features two bedroom suites, one with a king and the other a queen. Located at opposite ends, these bedrooms serve as private retreats, each featuring a full bathroom and a private entrance. I love this setup for traveling with adult friends or family—you’d just have to flip a coin to decide who gets the king suite.

A patio door lets light fill the central living area, which has a 50” TV and an electric fireplace. The nearby kitchen features a 10-cubic-foot fridge and oversized pantry, allowing you to stock up for long stays. There’s also a mini fridge, which you can use as a wine cooler or a spot to keep drinks cold, eliminating the need to open the big fridge as often.

A 13,500-BTU air conditioner comes standard, but you can upgrade it to 15,000-BTU. If you upgrade to 50-amp service, it’s also prepped for a second A/C. As a Midwesterner who travels during our humid summers, I would certainly invest in this upgrade.

Forest River Cherokee Wolf Den 306MM

Specs

  • Length: 40’1”
  • Dry Weight: 11,100 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,522 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 5

Looking for a cozy living room that lets you relax or entertain while taking in the views? The Cherokee Wolf Den 306MM impresses with a rear living room featuring two couches and a pair of recliners. A “televator” lowers the television into storage when not in use, opening up counterspace and a panoramic view from the rear windows. One of my previous travel trailers had a rear window like this, and we especially enjoyed the views from our campsites along lakes and rivers.

The family chef will love the interior and exterior kitchens, a large pantry, and an air fryer. Friends and family can gather to enjoy the campground cuisine, since the kitchen features a booth dinette, a breakfast bar, and open access to the living room.

This floor plan is also available in the Wolf Den 306MMBL, which features Forest River’s Black Label Package. That package includes upgraded construction with fiberglass gel-coated side walls, frameless windows, and thermo-foil arctic insulation. Inside, the designer fabric and solid surface countertops add elegance.

Specs

  • Length: 41’
  • Dry Weight: 8,380 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,970 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 7

The Jay Flight SLX 380DQS allows you to create the living layout that works for you. Traveling with kids? Swap the front queen bed for deluxe quad bunks. Want plenty of room to stretch out in bed? Upgrade the rear queen bed to a king. If you love the features of the Jay Flight, you can get a setup that works for you.

The floor plan is perfect for traveling with friends or family, and Jayco added upgraded features to make life on the road easier. Those features include a 52-gallon fresh water tank, a tankless water heater, and Solid Step® entry steps. Dark-tinted windows allow you to take in the views while blocking heat and harmful UV rays.

Jayco offers several upgrade packages, including options to add amenities like solar power, fiberglass sidewalls, aluminum rims, and a 15,000-BTU air conditioner. These optional packages and floor plan upgrades let you tailor this travel trailer to fit your needs.

Used 40 Foot Camping Trailers

Used 40-foot bumper pull campers can offer a budget price, along with layouts that may no longer be available. Check out these prior-year models:

Jayco Eagle 330RSTS

Specs

  • Length: 40’1”
  • Dry Weight: 10,665 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,585 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 6

The Eagle 330RSTS boasts a central living space and kitchen that rivals luxury fifth wheels. The kitchen features a massive 21-cubic-foot residential refrigerator, two pantries, and a central island. Plus, I love that the living space has plenty of seating, with a tri-fold sofa, theater seats, and a freestanding table and chairs.

At the front of this used 40-foot travel trailer, a king bed is located in a slide-out, adding floor space to the primary bedroom. The nearby bath has an oversized shower with a seat. Outside, a pair of awnings offers over 26 feet of coverage. On drizzly mornings or sunny days, I would appreciate having so much outdoor living space for lounging in my camp chair.

Other used Jayco travel trailers at or near 40 feet long include the Eagle floor plans below:

The cozy front den of Sportsmen 363FL feels like a real retreat, with panoramic windows, a plush couch, and stand-alone recliners (the furnishings vary by year, so always check online to see the individual units available). Real reclining chairs are a rare find.

The nearby kitchen has a massive center island, a residential table and chairs, and a pair of pantries. You will have plenty of counterspace for prepping large meals or laying out a buffet while entertaining. A rear bedroom offers a king bed, washer/dryer prep, and a private entrance. One of my prior RV trailers had a separate bedroom entrance, and I enjoyed popping open the door on beautiful days to fill the bedroom with light and fresh air.

The front bunk room features two bunks, a convertible dinette, and a bench seat, giving kids a private space for sleeping and lounging. Plus, parents will love that kids have their own half bath, cutting down the traffic to the full bathroom.

The living space also has room for kids, with a large couch or U-shaped dinette (depending on the model year) across from the kitchen. Parents can retreat to the front bedroom, which features a queen bed, extensive storage, and a washer/dryer prepped closet.

  • Dry Weight: 8,603 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,762 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8

The Cherokee 324TS is another family favorite, offering a sleeping capacity of up to eight. The rear bunk room is the star of the show. A large double bunk tops a wardrobe with plentiful storage for toys and clothes. Across the room, the cube sofa is a comfy spot for lounging. Then, flip down the additional upper bunk at bedtime. I know my sons would have loved a layout like this.

Another great feature for traveling with kids is the bathroom entrance, which makes cleanup a breeze for children and pets after playing outside. Wash off the dirt and sand, and keep the rest of the trailer nice and clean. The living room has plenty of space for the family to gather, with an oversized dinette and plush sofa.
