WHY SHOULD TOY HAULER OWNERS have all the cargo capacity? Some travel trailers offer the best of both worlds—garage space for gear and a comfortable living area. These aren’t toy haulers, but they’re ideal for campers who want added storage without sacrificing interior space. If that sounds like you, it’s worth comparing these unique trailers to some of the best small toy haulers to find the perfect RV your truck can tow.
Key Takeaways
- Travel trailers with garage space offer a smart alternative to toy haulers, combining gear storage with comfortable living without sacrificing interior space—ideal for campers who haul bikes, kayaks, or other equipment but don’t need a full toy hauler.
- Many bunkhouse travel trailers now feature flip-up lower bunks and rear cargo doors, allowing for spacious vertical garage storage while maintaining high sleeping capacities—great for families and active travelers.
- Models like the Jayco Jay Feather, Forest River Ozark, and Wildwood 28FKG showcase the diversity of these floor plans, ranging from family-focused layouts to unique couples’ trailers with dedicated cargo garages.

ToggleWhat Is an RV with a Garage Called?
Most RVs with garages are called toy haulers. Within the toy hauler category, you’ll find motorized and towable options. One feature is common across all motorized and towable toy haulers: garage space dedicated to hauling ATVs, dirt bikes, kayaks, e-bikes, and other camping equipment. But as we mentioned, the travel trailers with garage space on this list aren’t toy haulers. Their common feature? A cargo door that makes loading the “garage area” much easier than in other travel trailers.
Small Travel Trailers with Cargo Garage Access
These smaller towable campers prove you can get abundant cargo space in a minimalist footprint.
Jayco Jay Feather Micro 171BH

Images by Camping World
Specs
- Length: 20’2”
- Dry Weight: 3,750 pounds
- Cargo Capacity: 1,245 pounds
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 5
An upscale bunkhouse for first-time RV families, the Jay Feather Micro 171BH offers a cargo garage beneath the lower of the twin bunks. A cargo net on the interior edge keeps items secure, providing roughly 12 square feet of open garage space. There’s plenty of storage space with the lower bunk in the sleeping position, but it also flips up to give you nearly four feet of garage height.
While we’re discussing the bunks, Jayco’s twin bunks offer a 300-pound capacity. These particular beds also feature their own privacy shades. At the foot, a full wall provides additional space separation compared to other entry-level bunkhouse models of this size.
The Jay Feather Micro also excels with added features like the patented JayPort™ griddle/grill mounting system, a mounted rear ladder, and Quick Drop™ stabilizer jacks. With a 54” x 74” main bed, a convertible dinette, and a well-equipped kitchen, this bunkhouse travel trailer with garage space is a micro RV with serious hauling potential.
Rockwood Geo-Pro 20BH

Images by Camping World
Specs
- Length: 21’2”
- Dry Weight: 3,906 pounds
- Cargo Capacity: 1,092 pounds
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 5
Rockwood and Flagstaff are two of our favorite small camper brands, and the Geo-Pro 20BH is a great compact bunkhouse. On the camp side, a bike door offers easy access to the cargo garage, which expands with the versatility of the flip-up lower bunk. On the inside edge of the lower bunk, a wall keeps gear from sliding into the living area, but a cabinet door provides access to the garage storage from inside.
The rear bathroom offers a unique feature in its flip-up, airplane-style sink. This sink gives you the benefit of a bathroom vanity without cramping the space. That leaves ample room for linen storage and a nicely sized shower.
A slide-out expands the living space and makes room for a deeper 44” convertible dinette. At the front of the layout, you’ll find a 54” x 74” main bed with overhead shelving and a 32” swivel-mounted TV.
Depending on your region, you might find better availability for the Flagstaff E-Pro 20BH, an identical floor plan.
Jayco Jay Feather 21MBH

Specs
- Length: 26’8”
- Dry Weight: 5,545 pounds
- Cargo Capacity: 1,450 pounds
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8
Families with older kids who need more living space will love the Jay Feather 21MBH floor plan. Double bunks give you extra sleeping space compared to models with twin bunks, and a Murphy bed at the front provides added versatility from day to night. Use the jackknife sofa with folding table trays during the day and convert it to a 60” x 76” RV queen bed at night.
At the rear, a cargo door offers easy loading of the garage area, which measures roughly two feet across and spans most of the length of the bottom bunk. A section of the lower bunk flips up in storage mode to provide up to roughly four feet of vertical storage space.
In the mid-ship area, a slide-out houses a U-shaped dinette and an oversized pantry across from the camp-side kitchen. The microwave, 11 ft3 refrigerator, and three-burner cooktop inside are supplemented by the pull-out griddle and mini fridge in this camper’s outdoor kitchen, offering exceptional indoor-outdoor cooking versatility.

East to West Longitude 285BH

Images by Camping World
Specs
- Length: 33’9”
- Dry Weight: 7,628 pounds
- Cargo Capacity: 2,052 pounds
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 9
East to West makes loading kayaks and bikes easy with the rear cargo door in the Longitude 285BH. The bottom bunk flips up to create additional garage height. Because they’re double bunks, the rear interior cargo area measures roughly 24” wide by 72” long while allowing for another storage compartment accessible from the RV’s utility side.
In an RV designed for large families or those traveling with kids and their friends, dual entry doors make it easier for everyone to come and go. With one entrance right into the bathroom, kids can clean up without tracking dirt through the kitchen and living area.
When it’s time to relax, a convertible booth dinette and tri-fold sofa have viewing angles of the entertainment center. Separated from the living area by a pocket door, the front bedroom provides privacy to retreat and a 60” x 80” queen bed to recharge.

Jayco Jay Feather 27BH
Specs
- Length: 32’3”
- Dry Weight: 6,660 pounds
- Cargo Capacity: 1,540 pounds
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 10
Jayco’s Jay Feather 27BH is a large family camper with a garage and an outdoor kitchen. Adding an entry door directly into the primary bedroom allows parents to come and go without waking up the kids, whether they’re sleeping in the rear double bunks, on the tri-fold sofa, or in the convertible U-shaped dinette.
While the cargo garage isn’t the full bunk width, the lower bunk does fold up to add vertical storage space. The rear kayak door makes loading and unloading easy, and Jayco used the remaining under-bunk area to add an outdoor kitchen with a pull-out griddle and a mini fridge.
A massive 20-foot awning offers ample shade outside, and the L-shaped inside kitchen keeps the living area open and spacious. This camper trailer with a garage also has some intriguing optional upgrades: theater seating instead of the tri-fold sofa, a freestanding table and chairs in place of the dinette, or a Mega Lounge spanning the entire length of the slide-out.
Keystone Bullet Crossfire 2290BH

Images by Camping World
Specs
- Length: 27’
- Dry Weight: 5,625 pounds
- Cargo Capacity: 1,975 pounds
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8
The Bullet Crossfire 2290BH offers many perks of larger bunkhouse travel trailers with garage storage. However, it manages to do so in a footprint well under the 30-foot maximum length you’ll find in many national park campgrounds. They got creative with an L-shaped kitchen countertop, a rear bathroom, and dual pocket doors separating the bedroom and living area.
The rear double bunks measure 51” x 74” in sleeping mode, and both bunks offer dedicated windows and charging ports. Converting it for storage simply requires folding up the bottom bunk to create your cargo garage. The rear door allows you to slide bikes and kayaks in with ease.
A slide-out expands the space in the living area and offers a 12-volt refrigerator alongside a versatile dinette. Because this is the main dining and lounging area, it easily adapts to your needs, whether sleeping 1-2 guests, enjoying meals, or cozying up across from the entertainment center for a movie night.
Forest River Ozark 2690BHK
Specs
- Length: 32’10”
- Dry Weight: 6,578 pounds
- Cargo Capacity: 1,137 pounds
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 7
The Ozark 2690BHK stands out for its creative storage options and a unique living area layout. The double bunks offer a 48” x 70” bunk mattress, a window with a privacy shade, USB charging ports, and a wall-mounted storage basket. The bottom bunk flips up to expand the cargo garage, and Forest River includes two bins for easy storage organization.
While this floor plan sacrifices a larger outdoor kitchen with a built-in griddle, it offers an oversized 12V refrigerator accessible from outside. There’s also an LP quick connect for a portable camp grill. That sacrifice also means more garage space, which is easily accessible from inside or via the rear loading door.
Creative storage can be found in the pull-out pantry next to the inside fridge, hidden shelves behind the entertainment center, and a sliding spice rack that retracts into the raised kitchen bar. Don’t miss the open concept living area with its versatile L-shaped lounge with storage bins underneath.
Keystone Cougar 30BHS

Images by Camping World
Specs
- Length: 34’5”
- Dry Weight: 7,403 pounds
- Cargo Capacity: 2,097 pounds
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 10
Along with Cougar’s reputation for extended-season build quality, the Cougar 30BHS offers a bunkhouse floor plan with a twist. Try turning standard bunks 90 degrees and building them on an elevated platform—that’s what you get with this innovative travel trailer with a garage.
The double bunks are a step above the main living area, creating some separation while keeping the camping trip feeling cozy and together. The lower bunk flips up to expand the cargo garage, and an access door on the RV’s utility side makes loading and unloading hassle-free.
An L-shaped booth dinette converts for sleeping, dining, or watching movies. The ottoman/bench seat allows comfortable dining for four while adding a footrest when using this space as a lounge. There’s also a tri-fold sleeper sofa across from the entertainment center and fireplace for more seating and sleeping capacity.
Forest River Rockwood Mini Lite 2509S

Images by Camping World
Specs
- Length: 25’11”
- Dry Weight: 5,499 pounds
- Cargo Capacity: 1,434 pounds
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 7
Although it offers a compact floor plan, the Rockwood Mini Lite 2509S leaves little to be desired. Like most Rockwood campers, this layout is all about versatility—a 74” sofa that conceals a 60” x 74” Murphy bed, 48” x 72” double bunks with a flip-up lower platform for garage storage, and a robust optional solar power package to extend your boondocking adventures.
Even the dinette offers surprises. It’s an 85” U-shaped dinette, which is oversized to begin with. But by adding a removable table, you can use it traditionally inside, move it outdoors for a picnic or prep table, or drop it down to create a lounge or sleeping area.
Below the upper bunk, the cargo garage features a net to keep contents from shifting into the living area. A rear-loading door makes larger items accessible from outside, allowing you to load them without tracking in dirt. While a 200-watt solar panel is standard, the upgraded power package features five 200-watt panels, a 3,000-watt inverter, a 460aH lithium battery, a soft start air conditioner, and more.

A Unique Couples Travel Trailer with a Dedicated Garage

Forest River Wildwood 28FKG

Images by Forest River
Specs
- Length: 32’2”
- Dry Weight: 7,789 pounds
- Cargo Capacity: 3,491 pounds
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 2
We’ve saved one of our favorite, albeit unique, floor plans for last. The Wildwood 28FKG suits truly adventurous couples. Dual entry doors provide seamless access to the rear bathroom or the front living area. This front area features L-shaped kitchen countertops, a bar top with stools, a full-height pantry, and theater seating.
You’ll love the primary suite, which includes a tilting custom king bed housed in a slide-out. The suite also includes a wardrobe, a desk for remote work, and a second closet with washer-dryer prep. The rear bathroom has a walk-in shower, recessed linen storage, and a beautiful vanity with an arched radius mirror.
However, the star of the show is Forest River’s unique Versa Garage. They’ve reserved the back of the camper for gear storage, with enough height for items like skis, snowboards, and (smaller) surfboards. They’ve even included a rack to keep equipment safe and secure in transit.
Depending on your region, you may find the identical floor plan in the Salem lineup.
Are There Disadvantages of a Garage in a Travel Trailer?
The key benefit of a travel trailer with a garage is extra accessible storage. However, most floor plans that offer this feature are bunkhouse layouts. Finding a rear living, front kitchen, or rear bath layout with extra garage space may prove difficult. The Wildwood 28FKG above is a rare example of a couple’s travel trailer with a garage.
