ToggleWhy Choose a RAM ProMaster Camper Van?
The RAM ProMaster is one of the most affordable camper van chassis. Manufacturers turn those cost savings into upgraded interior finishes or lower overall prices. But the price point isn’t the only advantage of using a ProMaster chassis.
The ProMaster is a boxy build, with interior dimensions around 6’3” tall and wide. Tall people rejoice! The ProMaster is the best option for sleeping widthwise in a camper van. You lose some aerodynamics on the road, but we’ll leave that for you to decide what’s most important.
The ProMaster comes standard with some great safety features. All models include Drowsy Driver Detection, which alerts you if it detects signs of fatigue. This is a great feature when solo traveling or taking long shifts on road trips.
The ProMaster’s other features are more standard across the board, but still noteworthy. Forward collision warning, a 360° observation camera, ParkViewⓇ rear backup camera, and blind spot monitoring are convenient when on the road and parking in remote campsites.
RAM ProMaster 1500 Camper Van Picks
With a smaller profile, camper vans built on the ProMaster 1500 chassis are more affordable and fantastic for travelers who aren’t hauling additional toys or a spare vehicle.
Thor Freedom Elite 17D
Specs
- Length: 17’11”
- Exterior Height: 9’5”
- Interior Height: 6’3”
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 2
Simple and sleek, the Freedom Elite 17D is excellent for entry-level RVers. The rear double bed flips up to reveal a mega storage compartment. Add tracks to tie down bikes, stack tubs of camping gear, or build out your personalized storage system.
Extra travelers are welcome in this van with belted bench seats that can be used as a dinette, lounge area, or workstation when parked. While the counterspace isn’t large, the kitchen has everything you need, including an undermounted sink and a single burner induction cooktop.
Flat panel cabinet doors and soft-close drawers keep everything locked down while traveling. The vinyl floor makes the interior easy to clean when you return from adventures on the trail.
While the 17D doesn’t have an interior shower, it includes a rear shower with a privacy curtain and a 110V water heater. Personally, I would transform one of the jumpseats into a shower stall for extra privacy when showering or using the bathroom. If you’re looking for an affordable option to customize your rear storage, consider the Freedom Elite.
Winnebago Solis Pocket

Specs
- Length: 17’10”
- Exterior Height: 9’5”
- Interior Height: 6’3”
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 4
Winnebago is known for high-quality campers, which usually means a higher price tag. The Solis Pocket is everything you want in a Winnebago RV, but it’s also budget-friendly.
Both floor plans are designed around a versatile, convertible dinette. Move the table to the side and push the cushions together for sofa mode. Expand it out for daybed mode. Remove the arms on either side and add a pillow for sleeping mode. This innovative design meets any needs in a camper under 20 feet.
The TrumaⓇ heating system is another standout. Camp comfortably year-round with proprietary insulation and a refillable 20-pound propane cylinder to keep the heater going.
Floor Plans
The Solis Pocket has two floor plans to choose from.
- 36A – The 36A is a bit more gear-focused. The rear features L-Track cargo ties and a MOLLE cargo gate to keep things from sliding around. One thing to note is that the 36A does not include a shower system or water heater. This ProMaster camper van also features:
- A 52” x 75” Murphy bed
- Portable cassette toilet stored under the convertible seating
- 2-burner range with a glass cover
- 20-gallon fresh water tank
- 36B – The 36B trades the Murphy bed for a rear wet bath. The convertible dinette features more configurations to extend to a lounger or a 53” x 75” double bed. Some other features include:
- An optional pop-top to sleep up to 4
- EcoHotⓇ water system
- 13,500 BTU air conditioner (not available with pop-top)
- Wardrobe storage in the wet bath
Thor Scope & Rize
Specs
- Length: 17’11”
- Exterior Height: 9’5”

Thor’s Scope and Rize ProMaster camper vans are designed for experienced RVers ready to downsize or beginners dipping their toes into the lifestyle. They feature heated exterior mirrors, a touchscreen dash radio, and a backup camera for easy parking when you reach your campsite.
Residential vinyl flooring makes sweeping dust and dirt from the sliding van door easy. Roller shades give you privacy when you’re finished enjoying the view out of the large side windows. The Thule® bike rack mounted to the rear door makes it easy to haul mountain bikes or e-bikes to your favorite trails.
Floor Plans
The two floor plans allow you to choose the layout that works best for you.
- 18M – A large sofa pulls out into a 72” x 47” bed. The rear wet bath includes toiletry storage, a wardrobe with hanging space, and drawers. Other features include:
- Pull out countertop extender
- Euro-style upper cabinet doors
- 11,000 BTU roof air conditioner

Jayco Comet 18C

Images by Camping World
Specs
- Length: 17’10”
- Exterior Height: 9’3”
- Interior Height: 6’2”
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 2
The Comet 18C brags about being compact yet spacious, and it’s hard to argue against that claim. This simple yet innovative design can serve most campers’ needs. The rear features a full wet bath with a wardrobe. Like other Jayco models, the shower includes the Aqua View® SHOWERMI$ERTM water management system to assist eco-friendly adventures and extended off-grid camping.
Open the side door without letting bugs in with a screen door that features magnetic and zipper closures. Relax under the Thule® patio awning with LED lights. Jayco always includes its signature Hellwig® helper springs, which increase safety and stability when driving on uneven terrain.
The sofa converts to a 54” x 72” bed. My one complaint is that the side entrance is blocked with the bed extended, which is inconvenient if you don’t want to convert it daily on extended trips.
RAM ProMaster 3500 Camper Van Models
The 3500 is the heavy-duty option in the ProMaster lineup. Its reinforced frame and rear leaf spring suspension help when hauling additional trailers or vehicles.
Thor Eddie Bauer 20EB
Specs
- Length: 21’1”
- Exterior Height: 9’5”
- Interior Height: 6’3”
- Sleeping Capacity: Up to 2
A camper van with a king bed? Yes, please! The Eddie Bauer 20EB includes a sleeper sofa that spans 74” x 80” when expanded! At just over 20 feet, this ProMaster Class B RV is excellent for campers who want a little bit of everything. While many smaller RV vans include cassette toilets, this camper van has a traditional toilet with a 13.5-gallon black water tank.
Camper vans don’t often come with much counterspace. I love that Thor included a flip-up countertop extension near the entry to provide an extra prep surface. You could also use it as a small desk by swiveling around the co-captain’s chair.
Get privacy at your campsite with the easy-to-close zipper window privacy shades, and relax with your favorite movie or show on the swivel TV. You can also pull out your Thule® power patio awning and enjoy the outdoors. This ProMaster van camper is versatile and functional, all with an affordable price tag.

Hi Tucker – considering purchasing a class B on a Promaster chassis. Can’t afford new, but of the used ones out there, which ones are roomiest with a bathroom that includes hot water shower? Great article, thanks!
Hi Tom,
You can explore our full collection of used class B motorhomes here: https://rv.campingworld.com/searchresults?zip=60666&forcedistance=nationwide&condition=used&rv_class=b
I’d highly recommend visiting a Camping World dealership near you to tour some of these models in person to find one that feels roomy enough for you. Here’s where you can find a location in your area: https://rv.campingworld.com/locations
Hope that helps!
Built mine from a Nissan NV 2500. 25,000 miles all around the country n haven’t seen another. Vehicle has 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. Shorter inside than Ram Ford n Mercedes. A/C,extra AGM battery, 2,000 watt inverter, cheap Lowe’s frig freezer runs on 80 watts, marine toilet n plumbed w water heater, sink n shower
Awesome Dave!
I own the Thor Sequence 20L, and it has been the best RV to use when you have dogs, as well as simply driving long distances, where you can simply leave the passenger seat to either use the toilet, or watch TV. You can use the rear AC turning on the generator, and simply purchasing a cover, keeping the vehicle plugged in for 110 voltage keeps all batteries charged. I really cannot find anything wrong with this vehicle. I don’t have to deal with Mercedez costs, Ford Transit issues, and even have a place for my dogs water and food. It comes with a screen door, awning, bike rack, and then I added a storage container to the rear. Something that has to be done simply to bring tools and more barbeque tools. It has a way to use the propane for barbecue grill, and then it has a small solor array on top to keep the refrigerator going for 30 hours. The prices have increased from 79k to 140k for the same 2021 Van.
Great advice Michael!
Thanks for sharing your recommendation!
I would like to see videos of the Winnebago Solid..all of them. I like to see pictures as well.
