About Contributor

Kerri Cox is a teacher and freelance writer. After hating the outdoors for much of her life, an RV trip with her in-laws to Colorado changed Kerri’s life. She soon bought an RV for cross-country family trips. Her sons are now grown, so she and her husband have entered the next stage of their journey as empty nesters. She especially loves to visit mountains and national parks.

WHILE BUNKHOUSES ARE GREAT OPTIONS for small families, there are other 4-person travel trailer layouts, especially if you’re open to the idea of convertible beds. These floor plans dedicate more room for living space, allowing for optimum versatility.

As my teenage sons got older, they traveled with us less often, leaving us with wasted bunk bed space. But we weren’t quite ready to downsize to an RV without room for four. A versatile four-person RV would have been perfect for this stage of our lives. Luckily, there are four-person travel trailers for every family or for hosting occasional guests.

Key Takeaways

  • Versatility for Families of Four: Travel trailers with convertible beds offer more living space than bunkhouses, making them ideal for families with older kids, guests, or changing needs. Choosing the right size starts with understanding tow capacity, storage space, and sleeping preferences.
  • Lightweight Options: Smaller four-person trailers under 5,000 pounds—like the Coleman Light 21RX, Campsite Reserve 23SF, Jay Flight SLX 210QB, and Coleman 19R—balance towability with features such as rear kitchens, slideless layouts, and convertible seating for extra beds.
  • Larger Luxury Models: Bigger trailers like the Campsite Reserve 25MW, Coleman Legacy 2950RL, Jay Flight SLX 262RLS, and Salem 270ZEN provide high-end interiors, creative storage, and expansive living areas.

Are you ready to explore some of the best 4-person travel trailers?

What Size Travel Trailer is Best for a Family of 4?

Since there is so much variety in RVs for four-person families, how do you decide which size travel trailer is right for you? Understanding your vehicle’s towing capacity is the critical first step. You can explore the best tow vehicles in general, or narrow your search to SUVs made for RV towing if you’re interested in a lighter model.

Here are some general weight guidelines for towing:

  • Mid-size SUVs usually tow approximately 3,000 to 6,000 pounds.
  • Larger SUVs and compact trucks usually tow approximately 4,000 to 7,700 pounds.
  • Full-size trucks usually tow approximately 10,000 to 13,500 pounds.

In addition to matching your tow vehicle and travel trailer, consider where you’ll store your RV, as this influences how long and tall your RV can be. Luckily, you can find small four-person travel trailers for practically any size storage space.

Finally, consider sleeping preferences. If you want dedicated beds for everyone, you may prefer a bunkhouse. If you’re open to convertible beds, you can find layouts with sofas and dinettes that provide additional sleeping spaces.

If you don’t think a bunkhouse is for you, consider the following four-person travel trailers that offer convertible beds in the sofas and dinettes.

Small 4 Person Travel Trailer Options

If you have an SUV or compact truck with a tow capacity of around 5,000 pounds, here are some lightweight 4-person travel trailers:

Specs

  • Length: 25’5”
  • Dry Weight: 4,465 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,035 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 4
  • Floor Plan: Rear Kitchen

Many desirable features come standard on the Coleman Light 21RX, including an entry door assist handle, an Oxygenics® shower head, and a medicine cabinet. Thanks to the Suburban® tankless water heater, you can take long, hot showers and easily hook up your outdoor grill or griddle with the LP quick connect.

A separate entrance for the front bedroom is another amenity you’ll surely enjoy since it allows ease of access and lets in air and light. The pass through bathroom is easily accessible from both sleeping spaces and adds more privacy.

The rear kitchen is a standout for a trailer of this length, offering a wall of cabinets, a high-rise faucet, and seamless countertops. As someone who never used the propane ovens in my travel trailers, I especially like the space savings offered by the combo convection oven, microwave, and air fryer. Whether you want to bake cookies or fry some wings, this appliance can do it.

  • Dry Weight: 4,818 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,882 pounds

While slideouts expand your space, slideless RV floor plans require less maintenance and may be lighter. If you’d like a slideless camper, check out the Campsite Reserve 23SF, which offers a rear living area with a dinette, couch, and full kitchen.

An extra-large window in the dinette allows you to enjoy views of your campsite. This is an often-overlooked amenity you are sure to appreciate! The large pass through bathroom has additional storage.

The front bedroom is a standout, with a walk-around camp king bed offering underbed storage. Forest River provides cloth bins on open shelving here and in the living room for easy organization. Smart storage solutions are also found outside. The front pass through storage is accessible from an oversized magnetic door, which is helpful while loading gear.

You’ll find a good balance of overhead storage and large windows. Instead of a pass through bathroom, this layout has a mid-ship private bathroom.

This slideless floor plan is lightweight but packed with amenities. Jayco offers upgrades like MORyde® solid entry steps for stability, an on-demand tankless water heater, and G20 dark-tinted windows that help keep the interior cool. Reclining chairs are a rare feature I love to see in RVs, as they offer the true comfort of home on the road. The impressive rear living room of the Jay Flight SLX 262RLS includes a pair of recliners, a booth dinette, and a plush jackknife sofa surrounded by large panoramic windows. Relax indoors without missing the beauty of the outdoors.

The kitchen has an impressive number of upper and lower drawers and cabinets. You’ll also appreciate the instant hot water from the tankless, on-demand water heater.

The front bedroom has a separate entrance and a walk-around queen bed, with the pass through bathroom creating more privacy for both ends of the trailer. Creative uses of wood decor, light fixtures, and elegant fabrics add visual interest. The creativity doesn’t end there, as you’ll also find unique furniture, with a pair of modern swivel chairs located in front of the massive rear picture window.

The kitchen is also unique, with a massive island, built-in cooktop, and extended breakfast bar. In a clever move, the microwave is hidden behind a mirror.
