What Are the Best Travel Trailers for Families?

FROM CHILDHOOD through high school, summer vacations were synonymous with loading our Fleetwood Bounder and hitting the road. Though my trips nowadays are with my partner and our dog, I think about family travel trailers differently because of how I grew up. What modern travel trailers would have best supported us?

In building this list of the best travel trailers for families in 2026, I thought about what families actually benefit from on the road, including floor plans that would’ve worked for my family, plus what I’ve heard praised by the families interviewed for other articles on this blog. Ease of towing, space for the whole crew, affordability, and the details that matter more for larger families compared to smaller ones — I took it all into account.

If bunk floor plans by size are what you’re after, we’ve built out a full guide to the Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers of 2026. Everything below is picked through a family-shopping lens instead — by family size, weight class, and lifestyle.

Best Travel Trailers for Small Families

Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 16BHSW

Images by Camping World

Specs

  • Length: 21’9″
  • Hitch Weight: 475 lbs
  • Dry Weight: 3,594 lbs
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,981 lbs
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 5
  • Fresh / Gray / Black: 25 gal / 23 gal / 23 gal

I towed a trailer close to this size and weight for my first few seasons of solo RVing, and the Cherokee Wolf Pup 16BHSW reminds me why that weight range is such a sweet spot for young families.

What really sets it apart from similar small travel trailers for a family of 4 is the addition of an outdoor kitchen. Sure, the kitchen includes a flush-mount glass cooktop, a generously sized sink, and a 10.3-cubic-foot refrigerator. But the added versatility of indoor-outdoor cooking was the first reason I chose this one. The second? That exterior door under the bottom bunk is the kind of detail you only appreciate once you’ve struggled to access under-bunk storage for years.

At under 3,600 pounds dry, this is an easy first tow with a capable mid-size SUV or small truck. And it doesn’t require giving up the safety net of a real kitchen and proper bunks for the kids.

Affordability is a significant factor, too, especially for families. Wolf Pup is Cherokee’s smaller, lighter lineup, and it carries the same value that the whole brand is known for. Camping World prices for this 2027 Wolf Pup model (now available) start around $22,250, depending on dealer and location.

Jayco Jay Flight 175BH

Subscribe to the Camping World YouTube channel, and never miss a video.

Specs

  • Length: 22’3″
  • Hitch Weight: 340 lbs
  • Dry Weight: 3,285 lbs
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,315 lbs
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 6
  • Fresh / Gray / Black: 30 gal / 19.9 gal / 19.9 gal

When talking to families who own Jayco travel trailers, the most common topic that comes up is Jayco’s industry-leading warranty. But my favorite feature in the Jay Flight 175BH is the added privacy curtain separating the front bed. It’s easy to overlook, but it’s something that so many other competing lightweight bunkhouses fail to include.

Jayco also excels with 300-pound weight capacities on its single bunks (average is 250). So, there’s less concern about the bunks holding up over the years, and it gives you the flexibility to load them up with gear until you reach your destination.

The on-demand tankless water heater is a small feature that matters a lot for a family of four with young kids. So nobody’s fighting over who gets the warm shower first.

Honorable Mentions

  • Coleman 17B — I’ve seen more than one first-time camping family start here, and it’s not hard to see why once you see the price tag.
  • Hideout Mini 161BH — Keystone’s Hideout Mini line punches well above its size class, which is exactly what a young family towing with a smaller SUV needs.
  • Coleman 18OG — A great option if your family’s idea of camping leans more rustic than resort.

Best Travel Trailers for Larger Families

Forest River Wildwood Heritage Glen 301FAM

Images by Camping World

Specs

  • Length: 38’10”
  • Hitch Weight: 1,465 lbs
  • Dry Weight: 9,893 lbs
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,772 lbs
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 6
  • Fresh / Gray / Black: 45 gal / 90 gal / 30 gal

This is the floor plan I wish I’d had on the bigger family trips growing up, especially once my brother and I started inviting friends. The Heritage Glen 301FAM puts four real bunk beds plus a dresser in a private rear bunk room. For the parents, the front bedroom gets its own queen slide, dresser, ottoman, and washer/dryer prep.

The central kitchen and living area combine elements needed for a proper sit-down meal for a family of six, and a luxurious living room to rest afterward. An island with four chairs and dual opposing slides means everyone actually fits comfortably at once, instead of eating in shifts. The reclining theater seating in the super slide means everyone can relax for games or movies.

For storage, the extra-large front pass through compartment is vital for fitting a larger family’s gear. And the convenience of an outdoor kitchen with a mini fridge and a pull-out griddle is a must for prepping meals for six or more, in my opinion. The Heritage Glen is a step up in terms of comfort and quality. This is an upper-tier travel trailer for a family of six that will really feel like home at the campsite and provide years of enjoyable camping trips, if not full-time RV life.

Jayco Jay Flight 325BHT

Specs

  • Length: 38’4″
  • Hitch Weight: 1,080 lbs
  • Dry Weight: 8,475 lbs
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,125 lbs
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 11
  • Fresh / Gray / Black: 52 gal / 78 gal / 39 gal

“Sleeps up to 11” may raise an eyebrow the first time you see it, but check out the actual layout of the Jay Flight 325BHT, and it might make sense. Now, to me, it’s a stretch to sleep two each on the U-dinette and jackknife sofa, depending on their size. But that still means it fits nine comfortably.

More importantly, each member in a family of six has their own bed without having to convert the dinette or sofa each day. And when you’re ready to host grandparents or the kids invite friends, the convertible beds are ready to go. With three slide-outs on the off-camp side, this travel trailer expands the bunk room, dining/living area, and front bedroom.

Speaking of, parents will enjoy one of the largest wardrobes in this RV class, along with a second closet with washer-dryer hookups. If you don’t use them, that’s just even more storage for clothes and gear.

This Jayco model carries the brand’s industry-leading warranty and Jay Flight’s award-winning reputation for quality.

Honorable Mentions

  • Coleman Lantern 32BHS — The private rear bunk room with its own half-bath is the kind of feature that quietly prevents many morning arguments.
  • Campsite Reserve 27MR — The rear bunk room is truly unique, offering sleeping for up to four, a deployable desk, and a clever storage solution you have to see to believe.
  • Jay Feather 23MBD — Proof that a family of six doesn’t always need a bunkhouse if a Murphy-bed layout fits your crew better.

Best Lightweight Travel Trailers for Families

Jayco Jay Feather Air 19MBS

Specs

  • Length: 23’1″
  • Hitch Weight: 580 lbs
  • Dry Weight: 4,325 lbs
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,475 lbs
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8
  • Fresh / Gray / Black: 55 gal / 38 gal / 38 gal

Lightweight trailers used to mean giving something up, and the Jay Feather Air 19MBS is a good example of how much that’s changed. A front Murphy bed converts the living area from a daytime lounge to a nighttime sleeping space, and the double bunks handle the kids.

But the flip-up bunk storage is really what caught my attention. Not many competitors offer this kind of versatility in sleeping and storage. When combined with a 55-gallon fresh tank, I think this Jay Feather Air has serious potential for dry camping without leaving any of your favorite gear behind.

If you’re towing with a mid-size SUV or a compact truck, this is the kind of floor plan that gives you all the essentials every ultralight family camper should have — and then some. For more lightweight options, consider the best family campers under 4,500 pounds.

Keystone Hideout Mini 199BHS

Specs

  • Length: 23’4″
  • Hitch Weight: 495 lbs
  • Dry Weight: 4,085 lbs
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,510 lbs
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 7
  • Fresh / Gray / Black: 45 gal / 34 gal / 34 gal

The Hideout Mini 199BHS is proof that “mini” doesn’t have to mean cramped — or that low tow weight has to mean a stripped-down interior. Keystone’s Mini line shrinks the footprint and weight without shrinking what a family actually needs inside. I’ve seen plenty of Murphy bed setups, but the dinette-to-queen-bed conversion here is an innovative design I’ve only come across a few times.

That keeps the sofa as a seating space for full-time use. The dinette can be used for meals, and the queen bed drops down once the kids are tucked away and you (the parents) are ready for some well-deserved rest.

Keystone also delivers a 10-cubic-foot refrigerator for family-sized cold storage, an exterior compartment for easy access to the under-bunk storage area, and up to seven inverted outlets compatible with whichever SolarFlex™ package you choose. For families who want to explore without needing a heavy-duty truck, this is one of the more capable lightweight bunkhouse options I’ve seen this year.

Honorable Mentions

  • Campsite Reserve 17LS — A great pick for a young family who wants their first trailer to still feel like “camping” rather than a downsized apartment.
  • Jay Flight 211MBW — I like Murphy-bed layouts like this one for families who want flexible living space.
  • Wildwood FSX 174DBLE — Light enough that even a smaller crossover might be able to handle it, which opens up a lot of options for a first-time family buyer.

Best Family Travel Trailers with Outdoor Kitchens

Forest River Cherokee Grey Wolf 29TE

Subscribe to the Camping World YouTube channel, and never miss a video.

Specs

  • Length: 36’8″
  • Hitch Weight: 837 lbs
  • Dry Weight: 6,428 lbs
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,409 lbs
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8
  • Fresh / Gray / Black: 40 gal / 38 gal / 38 gal

Most of my best camping memories happened entirely outside the trailer, and the Grey Wolf 29TE is built around that idea. Earlier on our list, the Wolf Pup hinted at how far outdoor kitchens have come, even in small trailers.

This Grey Wolf shows what happens when that same idea gets a much bigger footprint to work with. Side-by-side mini fridges, an ice maker, a cooktop, a plumbed sink, and real storage make up one of the best outdoor kitchens I’ve seen on a family trailer.

Inside, the rear bunk room with two single bunks across from a larger third bunk gives the kids privacy and, more importantly, dedicated storage for their stuff. My only qualm might be that it’s far from the trailer’s only bathroom, but since there are two bathroom entry doors, hopefully the kids won’t wake you up at night.

Jayco Jay Flight 333BTS

Specs

  • Length: 37’10”
  • Hitch Weight: 1,180 lbs
  • Dry Weight: 8,375 lbs
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,125 lbs
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 11
  • Fresh / Gray / Black: 52 gal / 71.5 gal / 39 gal

The Jay Flight 333BTS made my list for its bunk room with dedicated space for a TV and gaming console, which would’ve solved every sibling argument on my childhood trips. As an aspiring camp chef, I was also drawn to it for having both indoor and outdoor kitchens.

Two slide-outs open the living area up considerably, and a third expands the bunk room. The kitchen island and hutch space mean you won’t constantly run out of counterspace, which is the number one complaint I hear from families cooking for larger groups.

Three total air conditioners also means this one’s built for camping through real summer heat, not just shoulder-season trips.

Honorable Mentions

  • Campsite Reserve 29TJ — The outdoor kitchen layout here makes weeknight camp cooking feel a lot less like a chore.
  • Hideout MAX 310XBR — A strong pick if your family does more entertaining than just cooking outside.
  • Prowler 3203DSB — Worth a look if you want outdoor cooking space and the convenience of two separate entrances.

Best Family Travel Trailers for Full-Time Living

Forest River Salem Hemisphere 310BHI

Subscribe to the Camping World YouTube channel, and never miss a video.

Specs

  • Length: 38’1″
  • Hitch Weight: 1,245 lbs
  • Dry Weight: 9,333 lbs
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,112 lbs
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 7
  • Fresh / Gray / Black: 45 gal / 66 gal / 30 gal

Full-time family living asks a lot more of a trailer than weekend camping does, and the Salem Hemisphere 310BHI is built with that in mind. The washer/dryer prep tucked into the bedroom closet is exactly the kind of feature that sounds minor until you’re three weeks into full-time life and doing laundry at a laundromat gets old fast.

A 66-gallon gray tank is also a useful number, as gray water fills up faster than most people expect when you’re full-timing. The massive outside kitchen and a 50″ TV inside are excellent conveniences for full-time families, but the enclosed underbelly, heated holding tanks, and optional 200-watt solar package are the features that do heavy lifting when you evolve beyond seasonal trips.

Compare availability for the identical Wildwood Heritage Glen 310BHI layout.

Keystone Bullet Crossfire 330BKQ

Specs

  • Length: 37’11”
  • Hitch Weight: 905 lbs
  • Dry Weight: 8,474 lbs
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,026 lbs
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 10
  • Fresh / Gray / Black: 54 gal / 76 gal / 76 gal

Between the 76-gallon gray and black tanks, the Bullet Crossfire 330BKQ has some of the largest holding tank capacities on my list. Sure, that’s a spec, but that added capacity is useful if you’re planning to stay put for weeks at a time.

The rest of the trailer is built for that same rhythm. A custom 66″ x 80″ king bed and residential-style bathroom countertops replace the smaller, RV-grade defaults you’d expect at this price point. The seamless kitchen countertops also withstand daily use, and you get a 10 cu. ft. double-door fridge sized for stocking up rather than restocking every few days.

The heated and enclosed underbelly with an extended-season thermal package also caught my attention. Full-time family campers don’t get to pick and choose when the weather cooperates, which is why you’ll also enjoy the electric fireplace under the TV in the living area. Keystone backs it with a 3-year structural warranty, longer than most competitors offer.

Honorable Mentions

  • Wildwood 31KQBTS — A solid choice for full-timers who want a king bed and a unique approach to rear bunk room design.
  • Campsite Reserve 32GT — I like this one for families with older kids, as it replaces traditional bunks with a true two-bedroom RV floor plan.
  • Wildwood Heritage Glen 314BUD — Worth a look if a dedicated utility/storage layout matters more to your family than maximum sleeping capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of RV is best for a family of four?

For most families of four, a travel trailer between 20 and 25 feet with a rear bunkhouse or double-size bunks is the sweet spot. Depending on whether you are traveling primarily with young kids, older teenagers, or other adults, you’ll want to evaluate the size of the bunkhouse, bunkroom, and even bunks to ensure everyone has a comfortable spot. Look for a 4 person travel trailer that offers enough separation between parents and kids/guests without towing more than you need. Weight matters just as much as layout here. Match the trailer’s hitch weight and GVWR to your tow vehicle’s payload and towing capacities.

What is the best RV for a family of 6?

Families of six generally do best with a trailer in the 30 to 40-foot range that offers a private rear bunk room with multiple bunks, plus a separate front bedroom for the parents. Depending on whether the extra sleepers are young kids, teenagers, or visiting grandparents, you’ll want to evaluate bunk size and bunkroom layout to make sure everyone actually fits comfortably, not just on paper. Look for floor plans with a second living or lounge area if possible, since six people sharing one dinette gets tight fast. Cargo capacity matters just as much as sleeping space here. Six people’s gear adds up quickly, so match the trailer’s payload and your tow vehicle’s capacity accordingly.

Is a bunkhouse trailer good for families?

For most families with more than one child, bunks give kids their own space and save you from breaking down a dinette or sofa every night. The tradeoff is length and weight, so it’s worth being honest about whether your tow vehicle and preferred campsites can accommodate a longer trailer before committing to the bunkhouse format.

How much cargo capacity does a family travel trailer need?

For a family of four heading out for a long weekend, 1,200 to 1,500 pounds of cargo capacity is a reasonable minimum. Families of six, full-time travelers, or anyone hauling bikes, kayaks, or other outdoor gear should look for a cargo capacity of 2,000 pounds or more. Remember that includes clothes, food, kitchen gear, and the usual folding chairs and coolers. Water also weighs 8.3 lbs/gallon, so a full fresh water tank can add 300+ pounds. Budget for that if you’re dry camping; otherwise, leave the tank empty until you get to camp.
