About Contributor

Originally from NC, our family has traveled America since September 2021 in our fifth wheel, visiting 29 states and over 50 national park units. We love the roadschooling adventure, learning more about ourselves, our country, and other cultures. Our favorite memories are at Zion and Acadia, where the sweeping beauty has captured our hearts!

FIFTH WHEELS OFFER A VARIETY of floor plans, from lavish rear kitchens to spacious front living areas. If you’re a family looking for two separate sleeping spaces—one for the kids and one for the parents—a bunk room fifth wheel trailer is an excellent choice. These fifth wheels with bunk room layouts provide privacy, storage options, and space for families of all sizes.

Key Takeaways

  • Flexible Floor Plan Options: Fifth wheels offer bunk room layouts in front, middle, or rear configurations, catering to different family needs for privacy, space, and function, such as sleeping, working, or relaxing.
  • Highlighted Models: Top picks like the Arctic Wolf 3650SUITE (mid-bunk), Cougar Sport 2700BH (rear bunk), and Montana High Country 397FB (front bunk) demonstrate the variety of space-saving features, lofts, storage, and sleeping arrangements.
  • Considerations for Families: Choosing between bunk rooms and bunkhouse floor plans depends on privacy and storage preferences; fifth wheels generally provide a more residential feel but require a larger towing vehicle and higher budget compared to travel trailers.

Fifth Wheels with a Middle Bunk Room

If your ideal fifth wheel has a spacious living area, you’ll likely want a mid-bunk floor plan. They offer the most space for hanging out, watching movies, playing games, and entertaining friends. Their separate central room can be used as an office or additional sleeping space, and most have a loft area above for storage or bunk sleeping. Let’s look at three excellent 5th wheels with mid-bunk rooms!

Forest River Arctic Wolf 3650SUITE

Images by Forest River

Specs

  • Length: 43’5”
  • Dry Weight: 11,383 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,762 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8

Most mid-bunk room layouts have a loft, but this space can feel small and closed in for some kids. The Arctic Wolf 3650SUITE features a single bunk in the loft with open access on the right and left, providing excellent air flow and a more spacious feel. The interior side opens to the bunk room below, which features a jackknife sofa, a trundle bed, a bunk bed, and a desk.

The rest of the camper has a similar layout to most rear living fifth wheel floor plans, including theater seating, a tri-fold sofa, an entertainment center, a dinette, a kitchen island, and residential-style appliances. One feature I love is the hidden pantry behind the entertainment center. This extra storage is excellent for a traveling family. In addition, the 16-cubic-foot refrigerator offers plenty of food storage for 4-6 people.

Keystone Montana 3857BR

Images by Camping World

Specs

  • Length: 40’11”
  • Dry Weight: 14,668 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,382 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8

The Montana 3857BR has the more traditional layout of a mid-bunk fifth wheel camper, with the loft extending across the entire area above the bunk room. This provides sleeping space for at least two children or an abundant storage area. The bunk room below has a bunk bed, a hide-a-bed sofa, a desk, and a closet.

The main living area has opposing slides, a hide-a-bed sofa, theater seating, a kitchen island, a freestanding dinette, an entertainment center, and barn doors leading into the mid-bunk room. I love that this fifth wheel has an 18-cubic-foot residential refrigerator with the option to upgrade to a 20-cubic-foot 12V model. Families on the go will love this upgrade! There’s also a spacious pantry and convection microwave to make food storage and prep super convenient.

Forest River Salem Hemisphere 369BL

Images by Camping World

Specs

  • Length: 43’
  • Dry Weight: 11,669 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,481 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 9

If you’re looking for a fifth wheel with a bunk room and plenty of storage, check out the Salem Hemisphere 369BL. My favorite part of this camper is the huge pantry—it even features French doors! If you’re a family of five to seven, this additional storage and the hidden shelves behind the entertainment center offer excellent options for stowing all your camping gear.

The mid-bunk room has a bunk bed, a sofa that converts to a queen bed, a wardrobe closet, and a desk. The traditional loft space stretches across the top of the room. The rest of the camper includes a tri-fold sofa, theater seating, a dinette, a kitchen island, an entertainment center, and a 16-cubic-foot refrigerator.

Another unique feature of the 369BL is the outdoor kitchen. It’s under a 17-foot awning near the camper’s center instead of the rear, and features a small fridge, a griddle, and the LP quick connect.

Fifth Wheel Campers with a Rear Bunk Room

If you prefer a larger room for the kids or more separation between the main front bedroom and the kids’ room, check out a fifth wheel with a rear bunk room. These floor plans generally don’t offer as much living space as mid-bunk floor plans, but they create more privacy for family members.

Keystone Cougar Sport 2700BH

Specs

  • Length: 32’3”
  • Dry Weight: 7,646 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,854 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 10

The Cougar Sport 2700BH is one of the smallest 5th wheel campers on our list, but it does feature triple bunk beds and a closet in the rear. One of the bunk mats is on the floor, but if you need space to sleep with many kids, the 2700BH answers the call. Plus, that mat easily moves to open that entire space for storage with interior and exterior access.

This fifth wheel also features a large U-shaped dinette, which provides ample seating at mealtime for a family. The L-shaped countertops create plenty of room for meal prep or storage for gadgets like a coffee maker or Instant Pot. And if friends visit for the weekend, the tri-fold sofa is an additional sleeping space. Even at just over 32 feet, the Keystone Cougar Sport 2700BH can sleep up to ten!

Forest River Sabre 38DBL

Images by Camping World

Specs

  • Length: 43’1”
  • Dry Weight: 12,848 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,800 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 7

Check out the Sabre 38DBL for a private rear suite floor plan. This layout is perfect for families with older kids who want private space. The rear bunk room has a bunk bed, a tri-fold sofa, an entertainment center, and a full bathroom.

But we’re not done yet! This unique floor plan also features an L-shaped loft with two more bunk beds above the bunk room. There are plenty of storage cubbies and closets for packing clothes and toys. It’s truly a private suite for your kids!

Because of this layout, this fifth wheel with a bunk room has a large outdoor kitchen with a 10’6” awning, providing plenty of shade for cooking and eating outdoors. An additional 16-foot awning stretches across the front side of the camper. Plus, a second entry door into the rear bathroom is terrific for washing up quickly after a day of exploring.

The rest of the interior living space has a kitchen island, theater seating, a dinette, an entertainment center, and a residential refrigerator. The rear bunk room is a smaller area, so it’s a bit more difficult to hang out in one space as a family. But I love the hidden shelves behind the entertainment center and extra hutch, which provide ample storage options.

Jayco Eagle SLE 28BHU

Images by Camping World

Specs

  • Length: 34’8”
  • Dry Weight: 8,420 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,575 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8

If you’re looking for a fifth wheel with a rear bunk room that still provides a large family gathering space, check out the Eagle SLE 28BHU. It’s slightly bigger than the Cougar Sport but has a similar layout. This rear bunk room has double-over-double bunks, which easily sleep up to four children. There’s also a closet for clothes and toys.

The main living area has a spacious U-shaped dinette, a 60” tri-fold sofa, and L-shaped countertops. Since there’s no island, you’ll love how open this space feels—plenty of room for a dog to lounge or kids to play on the floor. You’ll also love how the countertops extend from the edge of the bunk room door around the campside to the entry door. You’ll have plenty of room to cook for the entire family.

While each room has ample overhead storage and closets, be careful how much you load into the 28BHU. Its cargo capacity is under 1,600 pounds, lower than that of many of the other fifth wheels with bunk rooms on this list.

Heartland Eddie Bauer Signature 3000BH

Specs

  • Length: 34’11”
  • Dry Weight: 9,530 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: unknown
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 9

The Eddie Bauer Signature 3000BH offers a more spacious rear bunk room without adding more feet to the overall length. This camper features L-shaped bunks, which open up the space and provide a small area to walk around and access the drawers underneath the beds. The top two bunks are singles, while the bottom bunk is a double.

The living area resembles the Eagle SLE and the Cougar Sport, with L-shaped countertops, a sofa, and a dinette. However, this camper has a booth dinette instead of the U-shaped dinette of some of the others. If you’re a family of five or more, it will be difficult to eat together inside unless you set up TV trays on the sofa.

Keystone Montana High Country 389BH

Images by Camping World

Specs

  • Length: 40’5”
  • Dry Weight: 13,968 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,557 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8

The Montana High Country 389BH features a half bath in the L-shaped rear bunk room with a second entry door, making washing up after playing outside convenient for the kids. This bunk room offers sleeping space for 4-5 kids, with three bunks and a hide-a-bed sofa. It also offers one of the best storage options with shelves, drawers, and a small closet.

With three slide-outs, the 389BH offers a spacious interior in all three main areas: the bunk room, the living area, and the front bedroom. But like other fifth wheels with bunk rooms, this camper has limited seating in the living space with only theater seating and a freestanding dinette. However, there’s excellent storage with an 18-cubic-foot residential fridge, a pantry, and a coffee bar with cabinetry.

If traveling full-time or over extended periods, you’ll appreciate the washer and dryer hookups in the main bathroom. Parents will also enjoy the storage in the front bedroom: a dresser across the entire front cap, another at the foot of the bed, and two small wardrobes.

Fifth Wheel Campers with a Front Bunk Room

Did you know there are floor plans with a front bunk room? While unique, these campers provide privacy for kids and parents and usually offer larger rooms for the kids to play. However, these two fifth wheels are heavier and longer than others on this list, so you’ll need a heavy-duty truck to tow them.

Keystone Montana High Country 397FB

Specs

  • Length: 43’
  • Dry Weight: 14,710 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,090 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8

The Montana High Country 397FB features a front bunk room with L-shaped bunk beds, a full bathroom, and a set of desks. The desks are a fantastic feature if you’re a homeschooling family or want a designated place for kids to color or build! The washer and dryer prep area is also in the front bedroom.

The rear bedroom features a king bed and a full bath with a double vanity. While the bedroom is smaller than the front bunk room, there’s still good storage and a spacious bathroom. Plus, the separation between the kids and parents provides privacy you don’t get in all fifth wheels.

One of my favorite features is the huge sofa. Instead of a dinette, Keystone chose to take up the entire campside wall of the main living area with a 5-seater couch. This is one of the only fifth wheels with bunk rooms providing enough family seating. The kitchen island features a flip-up bar for convenient eating if you can’t dine outside.

Prime Time Sanibel 3952FBWB

Images by Prime Time RV

Specs

  • Length: 46’2”
  • Dry Weight: 12,875 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 3,487 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8

The Sanibel 3952FBWB has an L-shaped front bunk room similar to the Montana High Country. However, this camper only has one desk area and features a huge entertainment center for excellent storage. It also has a front half bath rather than a full bathroom.

Other similarities include the rear king bed, full bath with double vanity, huge 5-seater sofa, and flip-up counter on the island. The layout of the front bunk room is the main difference, but another is the Sanibel’s massive cargo capacity.

With over 3,400 pounds of cargo space, you can bring all your camping gear without worrying about exceeding the GVWR.

What’s the Difference Between an RV with a Bunk Room and a Bunkhouse Floor Plan?

A bunkhouse usually refers to bunk beds only, not a separate room. For example, smaller travel trailers may offer bunk beds out in the open, referred to as a bunkhouse. However, other campers, such as these fifth wheels with bunk rooms, provide a private space for the kids.

Compare them:

Is It Better to Live in a Fifth Wheel or Travel Trailer?

While this is subjective, fifth wheels have advantages over travel trailers, such as higher ceilings, an easier towing experience, and more storage. Because of their residential features and spacious interiors, fifth wheels generally feel more like a home on wheels.

However, fifth wheels also require larger trucks with higher payload and towing capacities. If you don’t already have this type of vehicle, you’ll have to spend more money. Fifth wheels are also more expensive than travel trailers, so if budget is a concern, you may need to consider travel trailers.

What Are the Most Common RV Bunk Sizes?

RV bunk beds aren’t the same size as residential bunk beds, and not every RV bunk is the same size. They could be anywhere from 28 to 42 inches wide and 74 to 80 inches long. You’ll likely have to measure the RV bunks in your camper to get the actual size.
